Lt. Gen. George Athor, a dissident Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) commander and unsuccessful 'independent' candidate for the governorship of Jonglei state, launched a self-proclaimed armed rebellion against the Government of South Sudan (GoSS) in the aftermath of the April 2010 elections. Eight people were killed in a tribal conflict in Jonglei state in south Sudan in the newest wave of disputes among the tribes of the region, which is preparing to be officially declared independent on coming July 9.
"A dispute over cows between Murle and Nuer tribes has led to killing of eight people at Iyod county in Kwatchdeng area in Jonglei state in south Sudan," Kuol Manyang Juuk, Governor of Jonglei state, told Xinhua Wednesday. "The fighting is still continuing. We have sent police units but they could not deal with the incident as these units lack enough capabilities," he said. He went on saying that "I have asked the government of southern Sudan to assist in ending this dispute, but there is no response until now. I have also called on the members of the state's legislative council and the Sultans to cooperate with the state government to end such disputes which the state has been suffering from since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). A two week Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) operation in Jonglei state, South Sudan, saw the destruction of 654 landmines and 1751 UXOs.
